Questions

Short answers, with the source where possible. Is your question missing? Let us know.

Is Euro-Office really free?

Yes. The desktop app and the servers are open source (AGPL-3.0) and free to use, at home and at work. You need no account or subscription.

Organisations that want professional support can get it through a Nextcloud Enterprise subscription. That is a choice, not a requirement.

Why does my computer warn me during installation?

The Euro-Office project's own installers are not signed. Windows and macOS cannot see who made the file, so they warn you. The project says so itself in its documentation.

That is why this site gives you Nextcloud Office by default: the same code, signed. If you still see a warning, compare the checksum before you continue.

Can I open my Word, Excel and PowerPoint files?

Yes. Euro-Office opens and saves .docx, .xlsx and .pptx, as well as the older formats and OpenDocument (.odt, .ods, .odp). You can also read, fill in and edit PDFs.

With complex layouts, macros or unusual fonts, a document may look slightly different than in Microsoft Office. That is true of every alternative.

Is this the official Euro-Office website?

No. Euro-Office does not have its own website (yet). Its official home is github.com/Euro-Office, with the documentation. This site is made by VoxCloud, to make things easy in Dutch and English. Every download comes straight from GitHub. About this site

How do I know my download is safe?

Only download from GitHub: from github.com/Euro-Office or github.com/nextcloud-releases. Every button on this site points there. Then compare the SHA-256 checksum. Download sites that offer their own installer are best skipped.

How is it different from ONLYOFFICE?

Euro-Office continues (forks) ONLYOFFICE, so the editors look very similar. The difference is who makes it and who decides: Euro-Office is made by a group of European companies.

ONLYOFFICE considers the fork a breach of its licence terms. The makers of Euro-Office disagree. As far as we know, that disagreement has not been resolved.

And how is it different from LibreOffice?

LibreOffice is a separate, older open-source office suite from The Document Foundation. Both are free. Euro-Office has a tabbed layout that resembles Microsoft Office, and it is built for working together in the browser as well. The quickest way to find out which suits you is to try.

Can it replace Microsoft 365?

For documents, spreadsheets and presentations: for many people, yes. Euro-Office is not a cloud service with email and calendar like Microsoft 365. The desktop app works on your own computer; working together in the browser goes through a platform such as Nextcloud.

Is Office EU the same as Euro-Office?

No. Office EU (office.eu) is a separate, paid service from a Dutch company. That company does take part in the Euro-Office project. Euro-Office itself is free software.

Is there an app for my phone or tablet?

Not yet. The project is working on mobile apps.

Does it run on my Intel Mac?

No, there is only a build for Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and newer). To check your chip, open Apple menu › About This Mac.

How do I get new versions?

This site always shows the newest version; we fetch it from GitHub every day. On Linux you can also use the signed Nextcloud Office package repositories, so updates arrive automatically. See the installation guide.

Can I help?

Please do. Report bugs and join the discussion at github.com/Euro-Office. Even if you are not a programmer, a clear bug report with an example file helps.
